My job and Keith Evans

Some former coworkers and students showed up to do a talk about their just released game… the Bourne Conspiracy. One of them said something…

At times, I feel like I don’t have much to speak for from my chosen field. Of course I want to do something that others wonder about… but I’ve worked with people like Dave Arneson and there are things you can strive for, and there are things like D&D you just cant try to achieve, they simply happen.

Perhaps the desire to be able to support a particular lifestyle is something common to all societies. I certainly wish that my current job allowed me to support a lifestyle that can support another life… starting a family at this point is rather difficult. I’m sure previous lifestyle choices are dictating my current possibilities.

To the point: I get paid in more than money. Keith Evans said that my pushing their team while in my class to make a great and memorable game (Snowdown) was a big part of him getting a job… that actually feels great, and i hope that memory of that game made without being paid, or without publishing, etc. is something that he (and them and you) will be able to carry as self inspiration; evidence that people can work without the reward being money…

I wish that all the students I have that may think that I’m being tough on themĀ understant that itĀ is actually my desire for them to be able to show those efforts to the world and remembering that all i want is their success.
